Ask five SEO agencies what to call the layer beyond SEO and GEO, and you'll get five different answers: AVO, ASO, AIVO, Agentic AEO. One of them, "AVO," has a stranger story than the rest. Wikipedia's own editors caught and removed an article promoting it, flagged as AI-generated marketing writing. That's the first thing worth knowing before you build content around any of these terms.
SEO gets humans to find you on Google. GEO gets AI tools like ChatGPT to cite you in an answer. Agentic SEO is the third layer: AI agents that search, compare, and sometimes act on a person's behalf, without a human ever reading your website. Ahrefs, one of the most trusted names in SEO, uses this exact term. This guide does too, and explains why below.
Key Takeaways
- AI agent traffic to websites grew 7,851% year-over-year in 2025, but fewer than 5% of sites are optimized for it (HUMAN Security, 2026; Similarweb, May 2026).
- "Agentic SEO" (Ahrefs), "AVO" (a handful of vendors), and "ASO" (Adobe/Semrush) all describe roughly the same layer. This guide uses Agentic SEO because it's the term with the most independent, trustworthy backing, not the most marketing behind it.
- SEO, GEO, and Agentic SEO stack. Build SEO first, then GEO, then Agentic SEO. Skipping ahead wastes effort, since each layer leans on signals the one before it builds.

What Is SEO, in One Minute
SEO earns rankings in traditional Google and Bing results so humans can find your page. In 2026, organic click-through rates drop 61% on average once an AI Overview appears above the results (GoodFirms, 2026). Fewer clicks does not mean SEO stopped mattering. It means ranking well now feeds the next two layers as much as it feeds a direct click.
AI-generated answers still draw heavily on page-one organic results when they decide what to cite. A page that does not rank rarely gets picked up by GEO or Agentic SEO either. SEO stays the base layer everything else builds on, even as fewer humans click straight through to it.

What Is GEO, in Two Minutes
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) earns citations inside AI-generated answers: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. The audience is still human. They just read the AI's summary instead of clicking through to your page. In 2026, brands already cited in AI Overviews earn 120% more organic clicks per impression than competitors who go uncited (Frase, 2026).
GEO content is not the same brief as an SEO page. It prioritizes entity clarity (does the AI know exactly who you are and what you sell) over keyword density, and it leans on third-party trust signals a search engine barely notices. Writing one page for both jobs usually serves neither well.
Explore our GEO programme for the specifics of how this differs from traditional SEO work.
Agentic SEO: The Layer Beyond SEO and GEO
Agentic SEO means making your business easy for an AI agent to find, judge, and act on, without a human ever reading the page. The agent searches, compares offers, and sometimes completes a task on its own. Ahrefs, one of the most cited SEO authorities in the industry, has a dedicated guide on this exact term: "What Is Agentic SEO?" (Ahrefs, 2026).
Picture someone telling ChatGPT: "find me a search visibility agency in London that works with MENA businesses." The agent browses a handful of sites, checks reviews on third-party platforms, and returns a shortlist. Nobody on the buyer's side read your homepage. If the agent could not parse it, compare it, or trust it, you were never in the running.
The gap in that chart is the whole opportunity. AI agent traffic grew nearly 79 times over in a single year, and almost nobody has caught up yet. A widely-cited 2026 AI Search Visibility Report, covering 1,700 businesses across 32 industries, found 88% did not appear at all when asked about directly in ChatGPT (figure as reported by Kovel Studio, 2026; original report publisher unconfirmed). Directionally, this matches the readiness gap above even if the exact figure needs independent verification. Most invisible businesses are not being judged and rejected. They are simply not being seen by the agent at all.
Adobe made this real in April 2026. Its Brand Visibility framework, unveiled at Adobe Summit after the $1.9 billion Semrush acquisition, formally named SEO, GEO, and ASO (Agentic Search Optimization, Adobe's own name for this layer) as the three layers a brand now has to manage (BusinessWire, April 2026). That was the moment this stopped being a theoretical fourth acronym. A major platform vendor was now building tools around it, even if it picked a different name than the one this guide uses.
This is not a B2C curiosity either. In 2026, 70% of consumers say they prefer generative AI tools over traditional search for product and service recommendations, and 50% have already made a purchase based on a GenAI recommendation (Elogic Commerce, 2026). On the B2B side, agents are moving even faster. By 2028, an estimated 90% of B2B purchases are projected to go through AI agents, routing more than $15 trillion through deals the agents helped make (Nevermined, Agentic Commerce Growth Statistics, 2026). For a consultant, law firm, or accountancy practice in the UAE, that is the exact buyer journey Agentic SEO protects.

Why This Post Doesn't Use "AVO"
Checking this properly, rather than repeating whichever term showed up first, changed the recommendation here. Three findings, in order of how much they matter.
First: Ahrefs uses "Agentic SEO." Search Engine Land, Search Engine Journal, HubSpot, Backlinko, and Conductor either don't use "AVO" at all, or describe the same underlying idea under a different name ("Agentic AEO" at Conductor, "agentic AI and SEO" at Search Engine Land). Ahrefs went as far as publishing a dedicated guide with that exact title.
Second: "AVO" is real, but narrower and less independent than it first looked. SearchAtlas, a genuine SEO tool company behind the OTTO SEO product, runs an "Agentic Marketing Summit" with a session literally titled "Agentic Visibility Optimization (AVO)." That's a real, findable source, not a rumor. But even SearchAtlas's own flagship product defaults to plain "AI visibility" for brand-mention tracking, not AVO. The term shows up at the edges of a real company's work, not at the center of it.
What we found: we checked this directly rather than assuming. Wikipedia keeps a page documenting a deleted article titled "AI Visibility Optimization (AVO)," preserved specifically as an example of AI-generated promotional writing. An editor's note calls it "complete AI slop." Whoever submitted it disclosed a conflict of interest. That doesn't mean everyone using the term is doing the same thing, but it's a real data point on how the term spread.
Third: the bare acronym "ASO" is a dead end regardless. Adobe and Semrush's official framework uses ASO institutionally, backed by the $1.9 billion Semrush acquisition. But search "ASO" on Google and you land on App Store Optimization, a completely different, much older field, not anything about AI agents. Whatever term wins long-term, it will not survive as a bare three-letter acronym that collides with an existing industry.
Put together: Agentic SEO has the strongest independent backing, AVO is real but narrower and partly tangled up with manufactured content, and ASO is institutionally backed but practically unusable as a search term. This guide picks the first one and says so plainly, rather than picking whichever acronym showed up first and hoping nobody checked.
SEO vs GEO vs Agentic SEO: Side by Side
These three layers are not competing disciplines. They stack. Strong SEO lets AI systems find you in the first place. Strong GEO builds the trust signals AI agents check before acting. Agentic SEO adds the final layer: making sure an agent can actually evaluate and act on what it finds.
| Layer | What it targets | Who reads your content | Goal | Key metric |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Google and Bing crawlers | Humans | Rank in search results | Organic traffic |
| GEO | Generative AI (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews) | Humans, reading the AI's answer | Get cited as a source | Citation mentions |
| Agentic SEO | Autonomous AI agents | Agents. Humans may never read anything | Get selected and acted on | Consideration-set inclusion |
In 2026, 49% of ChatGPT usage is people asking for recommendations and advice (Elogic Commerce, 2026). Some of those requests are answered directly by ChatGPT summarizing sources (that's GEO). A growing share are handed to an agent that goes and checks for itself (that's Agentic SEO). Both are worth winning, and they require different work.
There is a fourth column missing from most versions of this table: language. English-language SEO and GEO agencies now operate across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and the wider Gulf. Almost none of them do the same agentic-layer work in Arabic. A Gulf Arabic speaker asking an AI agent "كيف يختار الذكاء الاصطناعي الشركات" (how does AI choose which businesses to recommend) gets far thinner, less-optimized source material to draw from than the same question asked in English. For MENA SMEs specifically, that gap is where the real opportunity sits right now, not in the English-language version of this comparison.
What Agentic SEO Looks Like in Practice
We did this on our own site before writing about it for anyone else. BeeLoud added an llms.txt file at the site root (a welcome file for AI agents), set explicit allow rules for AI crawlers in robots.ts, and added FAQ schema covering this layer directly on our services page. None of it was complicated. All of it was previously missing.
Our own experience: the biggest gap was not technical. It was that our service pages explained what we do without stating plainly who it's for, where we work, and what it costs. An AI agent comparing suppliers cannot shortlist a business it cannot parse into those specifics, no matter how good the work actually is.
One concrete action per pillar, doable this week:
- Discoverability. Check your
robots.txtallows AI retrieval bots specifically, not just any bot:OAI-SearchBot,ChatGPT-User,Claude-SearchBot,Claude-User, andPerplexityBot. These are separate from the bots that train the underlying models (Anagram, 2026). - Evaluability. Rewrite one service page so it states, in plain sentences, who it's for, what problem it solves, where you operate, and roughly what it costs. Vague copy like "bespoke solutions" is unreadable to an agent doing a comparison.
- Actionability. Open ChatGPT or Claude with browsing enabled and ask it a real question about your own business. See whether it finds you, understands you, and could complete a next step (a form, a booking) on your behalf.
This infrastructure is not speculative anymore, either. WebMCP (Web Model Context Protocol) is now default-on across Shopify storefronts and Cloudflare-fronted sites, as of August 2026 (Spronta, 2026). It lets a website hand its real functions straight to an agent, instead of forcing the agent to guess from a screenshot. Similarweb's CARE model (Crawlability, Accessibility, Readability, Executability) frames the same idea a bit differently. Worth knowing, even though BeeLoud's own three-pillar breakdown covers the same ground.
None of this requires an engineering team. A robots.txt file is a plain text file. Rewriting a service page's opening paragraph is an afternoon's work, not a development sprint. The barrier to starting this work is almost never technical difficulty. It's simply that most businesses have not heard about it yet, let alone acted on it, which is exactly what the 5% readiness figure above shows.
Which Layer Should You Prioritize First?
If you have no SEO foundation yet, start there. Both GEO and Agentic SEO lean on signals SEO already builds: indexability, clear entity information, third-party trust. Skipping ahead on a site Google itself can barely parse rarely works.
A simple way to place yourself:
- No real website presence yet. Start with SEO fundamentals: indexable pages, clear service descriptions, a Google Business Profile. Nothing else on this page matters until this is in place.
- Ranking on Google, but never mentioned by ChatGPT or Perplexity. GEO is next: entity clarity, third-party trust signals, FAQ content written to be quoted, not just read.
- Already cited by AI tools, but never tested whether an agent can act on your site. This is where Agentic SEO becomes the priority, using the three-pillar checklist above.
As of 2026, only 14% of marketers currently track AI or LLM citation visibility at all (GoodFirms, 2026). The other 86% are not competing here yet. That gap will not stay open forever, but it is open now.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Agentic SEO?
Agentic SEO is making your business discoverable, evaluable, and actionable by autonomous AI agents acting on a user's behalf, without a human ever reading your website. AI agent traffic to websites grew 7,851% year-over-year in 2025 (HUMAN Security, 2026), which is why this layer suddenly matters.
Is Agentic SEO the same as AVO or ASO?
It covers the same underlying idea, but Agentic SEO is the term used by Ahrefs, one of the most trusted names in SEO. AVO and ASO both circulate too, but neither has the same independent backing. ASO collides with App Store Optimization in search results, and AVO's supporting content includes material Wikipedia's own editors flagged and removed as AI-generated marketing writing.
Why shouldn't I just use "AVO" since some tools use it?
SearchAtlas, a real SEO tool company, does use "Agentic Visibility Optimization (AVO)" as a conference session title. But even SearchAtlas's own main product defaults to plain "AI visibility," not AVO. Major independent SEO publications (Search Engine Land, Search Engine Journal, Ahrefs, HubSpot) don't use AVO at all.
What's one thing I can do today to improve my Agentic SEO readiness?
Check whether your robots.txt allows AI search and retrieval bots, not just training bots: OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, and PerplexityBot. Blocking training bots is a separate brand decision, but blocking these retrieval bots by mistake makes you invisible to AI agents entirely.
Do I need Agentic SEO if I haven't done GEO yet?
No. Build in order: SEO foundation first, then GEO, then Agentic SEO. Each layer leans on signals the one before it builds. Brands already cited in AI Overviews earn 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited competitors (Frase, 2026), so GEO is worth finishing first.
What to Do Next
SEO, GEO, and Agentic SEO are not three separate projects competing for budget. They are one build, done in order. The businesses that get ahead now are not doing anything exotic. They're just doing the next layer before their competitors notice it exists, under a name that will still make sense in a year.
The three things that matter most to start:
- Check your
robots.txtfor the AI retrieval bots listed above, not just a blanket allow-all rule - Rewrite one service page so an AI agent, not just a human, could tell exactly who it's for and what it costs
- Ask ChatGPT or Claude a real question about your own business and see what comes back
A free search visibility audit from BeeLoud covers all three layers and returns a prioritized list within 48 hours.
